On 5/16/13, the White House announced the appointment of Daniel Werfel as Acting IRS Commissioner through the end of the federal government’s fiscal year (i.e., through 9/30/13). According to the statement, he will “lead efforts to ensure the IRS implements new safeguards to restore public trust and administers the tax code with fairness and integrity.” Mr. Werfel holds a Bachelors Degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University, a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Duke University, and a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. [ Editor’s Note: Charles Rossotti, Mark Everson, and Douglas Shulman, the past three Commissioners, also had no tax law experience. Under them, Chief Counsel has been the highest ranking employee with significant tax law knowledge.]
