According to a statement released by Acting IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, the Treasury Inspector General will release a report on an IRS conference that took place in 2010. “While there were legitimate reasons for holding the meeting,” Mr. Werfel admits that “many of the expenses associated with it were inappropriate and should not have occurred.” He adds that “new spending restrictions have been put in place at the IRS, and travel and training expenses have dropped more than 80% since 2010 and similar large-scale meetings did not take place in 2011, 2012, or 2013.” [ Editor’s Note: An unfortunate consequence of the reduced IRS travel budget is fewer face-to-face meeting between IRS personnel and representatives of various practitioner and return preparer groups.]
